9. ( 62:26 ) FINAL WORDS: LOVE, LIGHT, AND DEALING WITH ONE’S OWN DARKNESS - PART TWO.
In this week’s FINAL WORDS, we continue the exploration, not only of what is ‘true’ relevant to an individual, but also the journey through the so-called ‘new age’ crap about love and Light, without embracing one’s own inner darkness.
I looked at an article that was a rant from a woman appeared to be fed up with the love and Light message, and it sounded like she just wanted to get down and dirty with anyone to embrace and love one’s inner darkness.
I shared that there was truth in her message, but I also expressed some reservations about how the message was conveyed. It appears that she has a personality type that thrives on that kind of interaction.
Whether this author is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ depends upon the individual reading it, and how one interprets it, relative to oneself, and how one has lived, up to the current moment of ‘now’.
I experienced something similar personally over the holidays and had to deal with a personality that thrives on this kind of expression also. I however am not that kind of person, and thus when pushed into a situation where a more dominant personality, or type A seeks to impose its definitions and expectations upon me, I recognized that a control drama was being expressed. Although I cannot control how one thinks, speaks or acts towards me, I can influence with my reactions.
Neither individual is necessarily ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ in expressing oneself. Most do not yet have the capacity for recognizing how simple words can be misinterpreted and also misused for an agenda either known or unknown. We ALL do this, and that makes it so important, in my humble opinion, to try to find the balance in allowing another to be oneself if one chooses to rant about love and Light crap while wanting to express the darkness within.
Luke Skywalker, while being goaded by the emperor in The Return of the Jedi, embraces his anger and begins beating down his father but as that energy is released, he seems to have realized who he is, in experiencing who he is not, and he turns off his light sabre, and refuses to kill his father under orders from the emperor and the temptation to jump to the dark side of ‘The Force’.
Embrace what needs to be embraced, but be mindful of that choice, and how that choice has the potential to unintentionally hurt others. You are not responsible for that. It is a choice for others to feel hurt. However, in this journey we are all trying to find a harmonious balance in speaking our authentic truth and honouring that, while also honouring the right of all others to be themselves, authentically also, even if it may not agree with one’s current definition of oneself.
I lived most of my younger years trying to avoid hurting others, and often ended up hurting myself more. Although less now, I still do it in certain situations. We have entered the life of another for a reason, and the presence of another in your life in this moment is there for a reason. Either one of those involved has a chance to learn something, or in the ideal outcome, both will find the lessons needed in order to be able to release the need to repeat an experience to learn the lesson that was not learned in that interaction. By following a belief that we are ‘protecting’ others, we may also be denying them the very lesson that they need to experience to further their spiritual growth.
People make demands on their partners to be more open and vulnerable and that requires a lot of trust and faith in a partner or a true friend. It is hard to find someone with whom one feels completely safe.
One needs to feel safe in an environment where one can share what one is truly feeling, and know that this will be honoured and treated with respect, even when the darkness within begins to be released for healing.
A question may then be raised by some people: If someone who is experiencing this ‘darkness’ is supposed to be ‘spiritual’, is the individual really as spiritual as he or she claims?
The answer that I feel guided to offer to this question is that there is no real answer to that question, because each individual is on his or her uniquely different, equally beautiful path, and any other who compares someone to him or herself cannot really do that. It would be like comparing apples to oranges. Both are fruit, and both grow on trees but there are also fundamental differences.
Who am I to say that another is more…or less spiritual than someone else? I certainly cannot claim that I am more spiritual than another, as I observe things coming up within me that make me question whether or not I am as spiritual as I would like to tell myself. However, we all experience this to varying degrees, and it is in our ability to reflect on what comes up, and how we try to deal with it, without manifesting it in physical energies.
Another article this week by Elina St. Onge, appearing on the SoulSpotTV.com website on 18DEC asks the question: “ Who is more in alignment with one’s path of spiritual evolution - a person sitting in a lotus position, taking deep breaths and in perfect composure, or a person curled up in a ball crying hysterically?
St. Onge writes: “ If we base ourselves on everything we have learned from ‘new age’ philosophies and most spiritual teachings out there, I think it’s fair to say that the person meditating wins.”
St. Onge offers this as an image and that it is only an image. Depending upon the person, both perspectives have truth within them. Perhaps the new age movement has presented a certain image of spirituality, in the same way the advertising industry has presented images of ‘the perfect body’ or the ‘idealized image’ of whatever it is they happen to be marketing.
She offers seven insights she has observed that demonstrate how spiritual people have not been truthful with themselves. They are as follows, and she also offers a translation of what the statement really means.
I have to feel good and stay positive all the time. Her translation: I’m scared shitless of feeling pain.
I behave spiritually, therefore I am growing spiritually. Her translation: I’m not brave enough to explore the darker depths of my being, so I’ll just repeat ‘love n’ Light’.
I use self-conviction to make me feel like I’m on the right path. Her translation: I’d rather live through the safe stories I tell myself, than trust my intuition.
I preach when I feel on top of my game, but blame when triggered. Her translation: I’ve got issues.
I use spiritual perspectives to bypass human emotions. Her translation: I want to get to my destination quickly and bruise-free. I resist and devalue the journey towards it.
I can talk/read about spiritual growth all day, yet avoid using my own life as my teacher. She offers no translation for this one.
I have found the truth! Let me anchor that forever and shut down any new perspectives. Her translation: I am forgetting that I am a unique, fluid and ever-changing being, on a unique, fluid, ever-changing path that adapts to what I need to learn in any given moment.
The self-esteem one finds for oneself can help guide one towards expressing the truths one has, hopefully as peacefully and compassionately as possible, while also standing strong in that truth in denying others the chance to take away that strength and self-esteem, hopefully also with the same degree of peace and compassion.
This is one of the issues that I personally have been struggling with and reflecting upon over the last number of weeks, and it came up squarely in my face in dealing with a personality that was not ready to respect who I am, but sought instead to try to put me into a box that was not my own.
Rule number two of The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz: Don’t take anything personally. Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.
Easier said than done of course, but then, this LIFE-path is all about ‘the journey’
